Title: Overview of Geodesy and why VLBI

Abstract:
In my talk I will give a general introduction of geodesy, and use Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) to build a bridge between Astrophysics and the interior of the Earth. Since the 1970s, VLBI has proven to be a primary space-geodetic technique allowing for determining precise coordinates on the Earth, monitoring the variable Earth rotation and orientation with highest precision, and deriving many other parameters of the Earth system. VLBI provides the important link to astronomy through the determination of very precise coordinates of extragalactic radio sources. But due to its Earth-bound stations, it is also linked to the Earth’s surface - the Earth’s deformation due to loading, plate tectonics or mechanisms in the Earth’s interior. I will give an overview of the interactions in the system Earth and its impact on the VLBI observables.

Maria Karbon obtained her Diploma in Geodesy & Geophysics from the Technische Universität Wien in 2009, where she also worked as a project assistant until the end of 2012 and obtained her PhD. From 2013 until mid-2017 she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the German Research Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam. After that she joined the VLBI group at the University of Bonn, Germany for 18 months, and later moved to the Paris Observatory.
